Beauty Chat: Sara Damelio, Founder of Skincando

Skincando is a Washington D.C. based natural skincare company created by Sara Damelio. The brand specializes in handcrafted skincare products made in small batches. Skincando uses high quality natural and organic ingredients free from harmful synthetics such as parabens, petrochemicals, fragrances or dyes and use non-toxic cleaning agents in the production process. The company also recycles and uses recycled and biodegradable materials for their products as, “We believe that it is just as important to protect the environment as it is to protect ourselves.” Featured in Oprah Magazine, Martha Stewart, Allure, GQ, The Washington Post, The New York Times, and the Today Show, Skincando has been recognized by many popular media outlets, skincare aficionados, and everyone in between. Sara was kind enough to share a bit more about Skincando and how she formulated her products:

Having battled acne since high school, Sara was always on the hunt for skincare that would relieve her skin and cure her ailments. As a college student in 1998, Sara was delighted when she got a part-time job at one of Washington D.C.’s finest luxury beauty boutiques, hopeful that her unlimited access to a variety of top-tier beauty products would surely solve her problematic skin. To her disappointment, Sara found that using these products further perpetuated her skin problems. She soon learned about the many toxic and irritating common substances and preservatives used in many of these popular commercial skincare products.

Sara decided to devote herself to learning about natural beauty, became a licensed esthetician and after several years, an organic beauty specialist. She began experimenting with skincare formulas at home and after about 1000 distinct trials, Sara was confident she’d created the ultimate skin elixir. She’d created a cream that was beyond effective for just moisturizing skin, customers raved that the cream alleviated eczema, sunburn, insect bites, diaper rash and blisters. And this is how Sara’s first, most popular product, the Combat-Ready Balm and Skincando were born.

Our products are concentrated and last at least two times longer than commercial products. Once the products are opened they have a shelf life of one year, however, we recommend replacing the creams every six months because of exposure.

What is the process like for creating your products?

Sourcing the best natural and organic ingredients, and a lot of trial and error!

I admire that you regularly donate products to US Troops overseas and that customers can also donate by sending Skincando care packages. What was the inspiration behind this and how did you collaborate with Operation Sand Flea?

U.S. Troops put their life on the line everyday for our country and freedom. I would not be able to be an entrepreneur in this company without their sacrifice. I am happy and proud to give back to them and hopefully, bring them a small amount of comfort.

What is your favorite part of creating your products and why?

My favorite part is creating the formulas, designing the packaging, and working on the marketing.

What are your goals for Skincando? What do you hope your products will show consumers?

My goals for Skincando is to grow the company bigger and to continue to give my clients wonderful natural products that are truly effective.

What are your favorite products from the line?

The Combat-Ready Balm was my first product and will always be my favorite because there are so many beauty needs it takes care of. From soothing a bug bite, hydrating dry skin fast, to gently removing my eye makeup.

Do you have any other favorite natural or organic skincare and beauty necessities?

I love natural and organic skincare products! I am currently in love with May Lindstrom’s the Honey Mud and I’m excited to try her Youth Dew.
